Hello JTWoods,

One of the following reasons can cause this problem.

1. The file is corrupted, damaged or missing.

2. The file is not intended for your version of Windows.

3. This is a virus, worm or other malicious file.

4. Hardware incompatibility.

If the file or program you are trying to run is damaged or missing, Windows cannot start the file correctly and sometimes displays this error message.

After you have downloaded this file and made sure it is complete and compatible with your version of Windows, delete the file and try downloading and running it again.

Make sure the file type you are using for installation is compatible with Windows Vista.

Also try running a malware scan on your computer.

Irfan X,

In this scenario, an error occurs. The problem is that JT was using a registry cleaner that removed (or disabled) the EXE file extension in Vista. Registry cleaners identify unused file types and ask if they should be removed. Always back up the registry before answering yes. Somehow the .exe file type got into this list. Unfortunately, I think the only solution to this problem is to perform a fresh installation of your operating system, as the older brother is aware of the problem, There are currently no fixes available. Sometimes i hateRS. I’m sorry.

Hello JTWoods

Thanks for posting on the Microsoft Answers forum.

You can try using a System File Checker (SFC) scan, but since you used a registry cleaner, you might have corrupted the registry, and only a repair install or clean install will help.

To start scanningSFC:
Click “Start”
Enter: CMD. In the results, right click on CMD
Click “Run as administrator”.At the command prompt enter: sfc / scannow

This will check the integrity and fix corrupted operating system files.

Reboot your system

Click Here are the instructions for restoring Windows 7 without reinstalling. For this you need a DVD.
