  • Back up your personal files frequently to minimize the amount of information you lose if you need to erase data from your hard drive.
  • If you receive any calls or emails suggesting that your computer may be infected, regardless of its legitimacy, ignore them. And never follow a link in an unsolicited email from a stranger.
  • If your computer is infected with unwanted antivirus, don’t pay anything, no matter how unpleasant the symptoms may be. Instead, disconnect your computer from the Internet to prevent the program from stealing personal information. Then write down the name of the counterfeit software (displayed in the pop-up window) and other details. Find the uninstallation information on another computer. Sites such as Badwarebusters.org and the sites of legitimate antivirus software vendors have a lot of advice.
  • Several tech websites offer free utilities, including BleepingComputer.com’s RKill app, which temporarily disables the program.ransomware so you can remove them with legitimate antivirus software like Malwarebytes Anti-Malware Free. You should be able to download the utilities to a USB drive and run them on the infected computer.
  • If these fixes seem overwhelming, please contact a friend with an IT background or professional technical support for help.
