    Over the past few days, several of our users have told us that they have experience troubleshooting Craftsman Riding Mower starter motors.

    There are many reasons a lawnmower won’t start – everything from fuel consumption to ignition will solve your problems.

    Locate the giant connector pins on the solenoid where the thick red wires connect to the solenoid path. Touch the two large connectors at the same time with the metal base of the screwdriver. If the engine is running and cranking much more, the solenoid valve is heavy and needs to be replaced.

    The next stop when inspecting a slow start mower is the battery. A low battery may not be fast enough to spin the starter mower and then turn the mower’s crankshaft. A lawn mower battery has a lifespan of approximately four years, so an older battery is required to replace it. Charge a weak electric battery and try to start the mower even after the battery is fully charged. Remove any corrosion around the battery terminals that could seriously obstruct the connection.

    The starter solenoid valve and starter motor work together to rotate the flywheel of the riding mower, which rotates the system during cranking. The technician recommends using SAE 29 oil when driving the lawnmower with an outside temperature of 32 degrees Fahrenheit or higher. Craftsman recommends 5W-30 oil if the mower is used in an outdoor temperature of 32 degrees, such as when transporting snow or mud during the winter. If you have changed the oil for this viscosity outside of these settings, you may also need to change the oil to select the correct viscosity for your application .

    Craftsman lawn mowers are equipped with a safety feature that detects if the operator is accidentally sitting on the mower and uses the clutch / brake pedal to determine if the pedal is completely powerless. If any of the switches are faulty, the mower will often not start. However, for almost all failures in the safety switch, the mower will start normally but will not start.
