Play WMV files in Ubuntu. Windows video files, also known as WMV, are a proprietary codec created by Microsoft. For laymen, this means that Microsoft owns the software that was used to record the video, and until recently, consumers would not let Linux computers help you read that code.

Windows files, also known as WMV files, are Microsoft’s own codec. In simple terms, this means that Microsoft owns the software used to record the video, and until recently, they probably did not allow Linux computers to read this code. However, Microsoft publishes its locked WMV files, making it easy to get these types of files. If you want to play WMV files through Ubuntu, you need to install Ubuntu Restricted Extras as well as a newsreader like VLC. Both are probably free and easy to install.
