There are many different ways to configure UPnP and this will depend on each device the person uses. I will explain how it works and how to set it up using the simplest methods I have used.
Server software . It is a program on the host PC that transmits a Flash message to a UPnP compatible device. There is already many different storage servers , but I found that using the previously mentioned XBMC which may have an embedded UPnP remote computer works fine, Mac users should check the lightweight Majestic carefully in case if Linux and users have to put in the effort for MediaTomb . I haven’t found anything more convenient to use on Windows. (Update: super easy to use PS3 media server which is a simple server required for Windows and Linux – and despite its URL, it supports many different UPnP devices. Thanks to everyone who tried this!)
UPnP compatible device for streaming. This could be a Playstation 2, Xbox 360, media store, software such as XBMC, B oxee, possibly Plex and even some TVs and DVD players. Check the device settings confirmation to see if it is supported.Whether it is UPnP.
For some tutorials, I use XBMC as one of my servers because it is about Windows, Mac OS X and Linux and is fairly easy to convert. As mentioned above, if you want to use a different UPnP hosting server, you have other options besides how you can. If you don’t have XBMC yet, download it here .
Launch XBMC and choose Settings> Network. In the Services section, you should see the option to share video and music libraries directly from UPnP. Select the field that appears and return to the main menu.
For example, if you want to share tutorial videos with another UPnP compatible device, just go to the Videos section on XBMC and click Add, Select Source. On the tab next to the Browse button, navigate to the file on your hard drive where the whole family stores your media, then click OK. The folder is now found by XBMC and automatically provided when you want to use a UPnP compatible device on someone else’s network.
Step 2. Configure UPnP Enabled (if Necessary)
Most devices really need to auto-discover UPnP servers, which makes things easier. For example, if you have a PlayStation 3, all you have to do is go to the video segment and see your computer boot up as a new source. Then you can search the general directories right from there. If you usually see your shared folder on your device, check your settings and also make sure UPnP is enabled as some of them don’t come with it automatically. For example, XBMC users might want to click Add Source while recording and select a UPnP device to search for devices on the network. Refer to the device manual if this is not obvious.
Step 3. Enjoy Great Streaming Media
That’s all! UPnP is one of the easiest ways to share media in and around your home, and usually only takes a few minutes to set up together. Remember that whenever you want to access your media in Marketplace, you need to run the Ultimate Server Program process (in this XBMC) on your main machine.
