This guide explains how to properly fix subtitles with strange symbolsmi, rectangles, blocks or ambiguity marks in VLC media player. Subtitles that don’t work are common with problematic Chinese, Japanese, Korean and therefore Arabic subtitles.
There are three possible reasons why subtitles don’t work in VLC:
- Subtitles are ignored in UTF-8 text encoding.
- You often use the wrong font for VLC.
- Subtitles are very easy to break
Encoding Subtitles In UTF-8

Generally, if the subtitles are not encoded in Unicode UTF-8, VLC will not be able to display them. The easiest way to find out if your signatures are correctly encoded is to open them in Notepad.
The first good enough image shows a Chinese letter encoding file that Notepad or VLC cannot read or write. The image used is the same file adapted to UTF-8 and renders correctly. You need to convert the subtitles to UTF-8 to make them understandable in VLC. You can easily convert a text file to Unicode using the inswork “Convert to UTF-8”.
Use A Unicode Font That Will Display In VLC
Step to: In the lower left corner of the settings screen, under Show Methods, select the All radio button.
Step 3: Expand Subtitle / OSD and select the word and phrase renderer. Now make sure the font is usually set to Arial Unicode MS, other Unicode fonts should work as well. If Arial Unicode MS is probably not listed, you can download and install it here
In any case, you may need to restart VLC after changing some of these font settings. VLC now uses a Unicode font which will definitely display all Chinese, Korean and Japanese characters correctly.
Still Not Working?
If you are sure that part of the file is UTF-8 encoded, but signatures still appear as strange rectangles or characters, you should make sure that you are using the correct VLC main font.
Step 1. Open VLC preferences by pressing Ctrl + P or just go e in Tools> Preferences
If you are sure that your subtitles are written in UTF-8 and you are using the Unicode font in VLC, unfortunately your subtitles still don’t work as subtitles mostly don’t work.
You can permanently tear signatures by starting to change the encoding of the text in the wrong direction (for example, trying to save it with Notepad).
