- Press Win + R, type gpedit.msc in the Run window and click OK. Local Group Policy Editor continues to run.
- In the tree, select Users> Administrative Configuration Templates> Windows Components> then Windows Explorer (Windows Vista / 7) or Explorer (Windows 8).

Thumbs.db, as the name suggests, is basically a file based database,which stores thumbnails of appearance files, certain types of documents and, therefore, video files, primarily for viewing thumbnails. To turn it off, you just need to check the box next to ‘Always show iconand, show thumbnails ”in the folder options. To open a folder window, the tricky method in Windows 7 and 8 is to press the Win key, type Folder Options, and click on it.

To free up free space on your hard drive, you can run the Disk Cleanup utility, find the thumbnails, and delete them.

You can also perform a new registry hack to disable the variety tile. Thanks to Geo for leaving this tip in most of the comments below.
Search this key for a DWORD value named DisableThumbnailCache. Change the setting from 0 to 1. This will prevent new buildings from turning into sketch caches. You may need to restart your computer for the changes to take effect. You
When you finish running Disk Cleanup, make sure the checkbox next to thumbnails is checked.
In Explorer, select Tools, then Folder Options and click the View tab. Select the main checkbox “Do not cache thumbnails” and click “OK”. Now Windows doesn’t just automatically create THUMBS.
If you are using Disk Cleanup, make sure the checkbox is checked in the text box next to thumbnails.
