If your system has a 40961 event warning, we hope this guide will help. Event ID: 40961 Source: VSS ASR Warning: Failed to collect disk information for ASR backup. Cause: Unable to get hard disk information for device 3 (Win32 error code 0x1). From the support forum: “In my case, this error was misrepresentation of iSCSI hard drives.”

We are using the backup wizard console and the backup failed for a week. When I go to the Event Viewer logs, I see that about a minute after starting the backup, there are about 4 VSS warnings (event ID 40961) showing up with the message:

“ASR Warning: Unable to collect disk information for ASR backup. Cause: Â Unable to get disk information for device 0 (Win32 error code 0x45d). ”

Since the last VSS failure, all backups fail until BackupAssist is completely shut down. The logs are listed below:

In this area, the backup starts in about 2 minutes.

There is definitely enough disk space for the backup (which is strange, since any errors after the last VSS warning indicate that the backup failed because the cumulative size of the resulting database would exceed my license 4096 MB limit). I made sure the backup drive is NTFS formatted and has over 2.5 TB of free space.

Two backup errors occur:

“The backup started on 04/09/2014 at 8:04:43 and failed with the following error code” 2155348010 “(Failed to create one of the backup files.). Run the backup again as soon as the problem occurs. She is eliminated . “

and

“The backup job ended with an error.

Any help is appreciated. Thank you very much!

Reason

The backup operation fails because Automatic System Restore (ASR) unnecessarily returns a non-fatal disk error. ASR is expected to return an error when critical disks are not available. ASR then logs a warning event for non-critical volumes. However, ASR returns errors when critical and non-critical volumes are not available.

Solution

The solution was simple: stop formatting the drive and try again. Actually I went for a quick format and just ran chkdsk k: / r to make sure the drive was working properly.
