What Failed To Initialize The General Update System And How To Fix It?

Environment

McAfee Agent (MA) 5.x
McAfee VirusScan Enterprise (VSE) 8.x

Problem

When starting auto-update, the following error is displayed:

McAfee Common Framework returned error 80040154 @ 1. (Problem: SecureFrameworkFactory.dll) ERROR: Common Updater subsystem initialization failed)

Make sure the McAfee Framework service is running.

Reason

One of the following causes of this problem:

  • Missing or unsaved file . DLL . This file is missing due to third-party software or incomplete update of an older version of VirusScan Enterprise.
  • Missing or empty Common Framework folder.

Solution

If file exists but is not registered, re-register
SecureFrameworkFactory.dll and SecureFrameworkFactory3.dll as follows:

  1. Click Start, Run, enter explorer and click OK.
  2. Go to: C: Program Files McAfee Common Framework
  3. Make sure SecureFrameworkFactory.dll exists in this folder. Otherwise, copy it from the same location on the production system.NOTE. If you don’t have another system, skip to solution 3.
  4. Click Start, Run, type CMD and click OK.
  5. In the command window, enter the following command and press Enter:

    Regsvr32.exe “C: Program Files McAfee Common Framework SecureFrameworkFactory.dll”
    SURE

  6. Click OK when you receive confirmation that the file was successfully saved.
  7. Repeat the previous steps for SecureFrameworkFactory3.dll .

Solution

Reregister all Windows Framework and DLL files.

You can usually fix this problem by re-registering the DLLs with McAfee

Common Framework

and DLLs folder on Windows

System32 folder

.

  1. Stop McAfee Agent service(5.x) or McAfee Framework (4.x):
    1. Click Start, Run, type services.msc and click OK.
    2. Right-click McAfee Agent Service (5.x) and select Stop.
    3. Close the Services window.
  2. Save all DLL files in the Common Framework folder:
    1. Click Start, Run, type CMD and click OK.
    2. To navigate to the Common Framework folder, type the following command and press Enter: CD C: Program Files McAfee Common Framework

      NOTE. The above command uses the default installation directory. If you specified a different directory during installation, use that instead.

    3. To re-save the files, type the following command and press Enter:

      for% m in (* .dll) regsvr32 / s% m

    4. Wait for the DLL registration to complete.
  3. Save all DLL files in % SystemRoot% System32 :
    Some of the McAfee shared DLL files are located in this folder.
    SURE
    1. To navigate to the System32 folder, enter the followingcommand and press Enter:

      CD% SystemRoot% System32

    2. To save all files in the System32 folder, type the following command and press Enter:

      for% m in (* .dll) regsvr32 / s% m

    3. Wait for the DLL to register, then close the Command Prompt window.
  4. Restart the McAfee Agent service (5.x).
    1. Click Start, Run, type services.msc and click OK.
    2. Right-click McAfee Agent Service (5.x) and select Start .
    3. Close the Services window.
    4. Start automatic update.

Solution

If any of the previous solutions did not resolve this issue, or if the Common Framework folder is missing or empty, uninstall and reinstall VirusScan Enterprise and McAfee Agent. A missing or empty Common Framework folder indicates an update failed.

Reason

FrameworkManifest.xml is corrupted.

Solution

Reregister the Common Framework and Windows DLL files.

Usually this problem is solved by re-registering the dll files with McAfee

  1. Stop the McAfee Framework service:.
    1. To stop the service, you must temporarily disable Access Protection (AP) in the VirusScan Enterprise 8.x console. For more information, see KB52204.
    2. Press Windows R, type services.msc , then click OK.
    3. Right-click the McAfee Framework service and select Stop.
    4. Close the Services window.
  2. Save all DLL files in the Common Framework folder:
    1. Press Windows R, type cmd, then press OK to open a command window.
    2. To navigate to the Common Framework folder, type the following command and press Enter:

      CD C: Program Files Network Associates Common Framework

      NOTE. This is the default installation directorychania. If you specified a different directory during installation, use that instead.

    3. To re-save the files, type the following command and press Enter:

      for% m in (* .dll) regsvr32 / s% m

    4. Wait for the DLL registration to complete.
  3. Save all DLL files in % SystemRoot% System32 :
    1. To navigate to the System32 folder, type the following command and press Enter:

      CD% SystemRoot% System32

    2. To save all files in the System32 folder, type the following command and press Enter: for% m in (* .dll) regsvr32 / s% m
    3. Wait for the DLL to register, then close the Command Prompt window.
  4. Start the McAfee Framework service:
    1. Press Windows R, type services.msc , then click OK.
    2. Right-click the McAfee Framework service and select Start.
    3. Close the Services window.
    4. Start automatic update.
    5. Activate access protection again.
