If You Have A Laptop, Tablet, Or Keyboard With An Fn Key, Do This Instead Of The First Three Methods:
The first three methods should work on Windows desktops or Windows devices with a standard keyboard. However, if you have a laptop or convertible device with an Fn key, the PrtScn key does more than just take screenshots. Hence, when you press keyboard shortcuts with the PrtScn key, Windows does not take a screenshot. Instead, use one of the following:
- Fn PrtScn – Takes a screenshot of the entire screen and copies it to the clipboard. This corresponds to pressing the standard PrtScn key.
- Fn Windows PrtScn – DoTakes a screenshot of the entire screen and saves it as a file on your hard drive without using any other tools. Windows saves the screenshot to the Image Library in the Screenshots folder. This is equivalent to pressing Windows PrtScn on a standard keyboard.
- Fn Alt PrtScn – Takes a screenshot of the active window. This is equivalent to pressing Alt PrtScn on a standard keyboard.
On some keyboards, the PrtScn button may not perform two or more actions. However, this won’t work until you press the Fn lock key. On these keyboards, the Fn key has the function of locking the function and media keys at the top, including the print soft key.
If you have such a keyboard, press the Fn key to unlock the top row of keys, and then use the keyboard shortcuts described in the first three sections of this article. You have to work now.
If you have a Microsoft Surface Pro tablet with Windows 10, you will need to use different keyboard shortcuts as there is no PrtScn button on the type cover. Instead, Microsoft provides the following links for the Windows interface10:
- Fn Space – This shortcut saves your current screen image to the clipboard so you can paste it into any application. This corresponds to pressing the standard PrtScn key.
- Fn Alt Spacebar – This shortcut saves a screenshot of the active window to the clipboard so you can paste it into any application. This is equivalent to pressing the Alt PrtScn key combination.
