How Do You Feel About Recovering An OS X Boot Disk?

You may see an error message stating that the OS x boot disk is being repaired. There are several ways to solve this problem, and we will talk about them a little later. Use Disk Utility’s first aid to find and fix disk errors.

Disk Utility can find and fix errors related to formatting and directory structure of Mac hard drive. Errors can cause unexpected behavior when using your Mac, and large errors can even prevent your Mac from fully booting.

Before proceeding, make sure you have an up-to-date backup of your Mac in case you need to recover corrupted files or Disk Utility finds errors that cannot be fixed.

Open Disk Utility

Generally, you can easily open Disk Utility from the Utilities folder in the Applications folder. butif your Mac doesn’t boot completely, or you want to recover the hard drive your Mac booted from, open the MacOS Recovery Disk utility:

  1. Determine if you are using a Mac with Apple Silicone and follow the appropriate steps:
    • Apple Silicon: Turn on your Mac, press and hold the Power button until the Startup Options window appears. Click the gear icon labeled Options, then click Next.
    • Intel processor: turn on your Mac and immediately hold these two keys until you see the Apple logo or another image: Command (⌘) and R.
  2. You may be prompted to select a user whose password you know. Select a user, click Next and enter the administrator password.
  3. In the macOS Recovery Utilities window, select Disk Utility and click Next.

From the Disk Utility menu bar or toolbar, choose View> Show All Devices tva ”(if available).

You should now see all available hard drives or other storage devices in the sidebar of Disk Utility, starting with the boot drive. And under each hard drive there should be containers and volumes on that hard drive. Can’t see your hard drive?

In this example, the boot disk (APPLE HDD) has one container and two volumes (Macintosh HD data, Macintosh HD data). Your hard drive may not have a container and a different number of volumes.

Recover Volumes, Then Containers, Then Disks

For each hard drive that you want to repair, first select the last volume on that hard drive, then click the First Aid button. Â or tab.

In this example, the last volume on the hard drive is Macintosh HD – Data.

Click Run to check the selected volume for errors.

  • If there is no Run button, click the Repair Disk button.
  • If the button is grayed out and you cannot click it, skip this step for the selected hard disk, container, or volume.
  • If you are prompted for a password to unlock the hard drive, enter the administrator password.

After checking Disk Utility, select the next item in the sidebar and run First Aid again. Move the list up and run First Aid on every volume on the hard drive, then on every container on the hard drive, and finally on the hard drive itself.

If Your Hard Drive Does Not Appear In Disk Utility

If Disk Utility cannot see your hard drive, it will not be able to see any containers or volumes on that hard drive. In this case, do the following:

  1. Shut down your Mac and disconnect any unnecessary devices from your Mac.
  2. Whenever you repair an external hard drive, make sure it’s connected directly to your Mac using a secure cable. Then turn the player off and on again.
  3. If your hard drive still doesn’t show up in Disk Utility, your Mac might need to be repaired. If you need help, contact Apple Support.

  • Scan, test and repair mapped drives with Disk Utility.

Tip. If the recovery partition itself has been damaged, enter online recovery mode by pressing Command (-) – Option (-) – R during boot.
