Notes:

Inbox Repair does not bind or analyze data stored in an Exchange mailbox. The tool only checks for errors (damage) and gives you the opportunity to fix those errors, if any. If you are unable to launch the Inbox repair tool, try repairing The Outlook program.
It is recommended that you back up your existing Outlook data file before running the Inbox Repair Tool. For more information, see Backing up an Outlook Data File.
Why Am I Getting The Error “Microsoft Outlook Inbox Repair Tool Does Not Recognize The File”?
MS Outlook data files are highly prone to corruption. For this reason, it is important to regularly back up your data. If you forget and your PST files are corrupted, you can always use the free Microsoft Inbox Repair Tool to fix them.
However, because its functionality is limited, it will not work in all cases, and errors such as “Microsoft Outlook Inbox Repair Tool does not recognize the file” may occur. This makes the tool unusable.
Here are some common practices that lead to high levels of PST file corruption, withwhich ScanPST.exe cannot handle:
- The most common reason is to close Outlook. As Outlook shuts down, this is a severe case of PST file corruption. Basic data files become corrupted due to a power failure, a virus, or even a deliberate, improper shutdown of Outlook.
- In previous versions of Outlook, the PST file size allowed was the most common issue for users. In Outlook 2000, this limit was 2 GB, which was significantly increased to 20 GB in Outlook 2003 and 2007. In later versions, this limit is 50 GB. After the data exceeds this limit, the PST file will be corrupted. Hence, it is always necessary to manage your files and delete unnecessary data regularly.
- PST files are not suitable for network sharing. There have been a number of cases where the PST file has been corrupted due to access through network drives. Therefore, it is important to periodically check your network devices and the server to avoid corruption and therefore file not recognized errors.
- Other reasons could be virus attacks, bad hard drive, wrong Executing files manually using third-party tools, desktop updates, etc.
