Why am I getting the error “Protocol: SMTP, Port: 25, Security (SSL): No, error number: 0x800CCC0B”?

This error may appear at some point in your email client settings. In Outlook, this error can usually be fixed by restarting your email client and making sure SMTP authentication is enabled.

This is not a server problem and it is caused by a misconfigured mail client, the ISP is blocking access to port 25 and is instead using port 26, or a DNS problem with your ISP.

To verify that the mail server is online and responding, you can do the following:

  • On the Start button, click Run.
  • Enter telnet yourdomain.com 25.
  • You should have something that works:

220-server.dnsprotect.com ESMTP Exim x.xx # 1 day, xx month 2004 hour.
220-We do not allow the use of this system for unsolicited shipments,
220 and / or mass mailing.

  • This confirms there is * no problem * with the SMTP server.

To make sure the POP server is online and responding:

  • On the Start button, click Ex Fill “. Enter “telnet yourdomain.com 110”
  • You should have something that works:

OK POP3 [cppopx.x] at [xx.xx.xx.xx] (yourdomain.com)

  • This confirms that the POP server is online and that there is no problem with the POP server.
